Several friends and colleagues have asked us whether our build will be on Grand Designs, our answer is no, there’s not going to be enough jeopardy! However, we thought it might be worth tracking how subjectively risky the build feels.

Designing a house - where do you start?

I imagine most people who have decided to undertake a self-build will have some concept of what house they want to build but are likely to be scant on a lot of the detail. For us, the main driver for the design of our house is its eco-credentials - we firmly believe that all new houses should aim to be carbon neutral if not carbon negative. Our other main design goal is to have a modern space to live in, scaling down from our current five bedroom 17th century home.

Serendipty - finding a plot of land

For some time we had been thinking about buying some land where we could build an environmentally friendly house but like most self-builders it wasn't easy to find a plot, let alone one which we could afford. Demand always outstrips supply.
